Blog description

Hello world!

I believe that economics as a science/discipline is plagued with many deep problems with the main two being selective blindess motivated by ideology and overmathematization of the field which builds a wall isolating it from other social sciences.  I really appreciate Paul Krugman's blog as he is able to tell complex economic stories in nice, simple and coherent narratives while not falling victim to erroneous conclusions or reasoning motivated by partisanship (see Latvian Adventures and Secular Stagnation (..) and Larry Summers).  His blog is obviously an inspiration for this one.  Obviously, this blog is not meant to cheerlead for Krugman - I believe that, for obvious and understandable reasons,  his topics are US-centered, although he does cover the Eurozone to an extent.

I intend to make this blog interesting and relevant by bringing in a somewhat exotic perspective on European affairs - I am a Canadian economist completing an M.A. political science who lives in Poland, one of the EU Member States that doesn't have the euro as its currency.  Apart from European topics, I will also discuss philosophy (practical stuff though!), international relations (do expect some posts on Ukraine, the hot topic of the hour), methodology (interesting and relevant stuff though!), and Polish politics.  Lastly, do expect links pointing to interesting articles/blog posts/researches as well as my own papers.

The title of this blog, Economics as if people mattered, is a clear reference to Small is Beautiful from E. F. Schumacher, an excellent book that every economics student should read.

Posting will be sporadic, but I do hope that I'll be able to post enough to make visiting this blog on a regular basis interesting.

Stay tuned!
